Mr. Tareq Md Ariful Islam joined this position in September 2025.
Prior to taking up the current post, he was the Ambassador & Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva as well as Ambassador of Bangladesh to Switzerland with residence in Geneva and concurrently accredited Ambassador to the Holy See, from August 2024 to August 2025. He was also the High Commissioner for Bangladesh to Sri Lanka from November 2020 to July 2024.
Mr. Islam is a career diplomat and joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1998. He was the Deputy Permanent Representative in the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York from 2016 to 2020. As for his other assignments abroad, he had another stint (2005-2009) in the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York as First Secretary/Counsellor. He then served in the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, India (2009-2012) as Counsellor. He also served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh as Director-General (South Asia) and before that in various other capacities, including as Director (South Asia), Director (Foreign Minister’s Office) and in the Personnel Wing and the Foreign Secretary’s Office.
Mr. Islam takes special interest in the areas of international peace and security, regional cooperation, international trade and human rights.
Mr. Islam holds a Master of Diplomacy and Trade from the Monash University, Australia and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Mr. Islam is married to Ms. Aliya Najma Nur. They have two daughters.
