Ambassador of Peru to the United States of America

A former career diplomat with more than 40 years of service, Ambassador Oswaldo de Rivero previously served as Peru’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (2001-2006), Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization (2001), Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Program and United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), Nairobi, Kenya; as well as Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland.

During his diplomatic career, Ambassador de Rivero has also served in London, Moscow, New York, and Geneva; as Undersecretary of Economic Affairs and Integration, Director of Economic Affairs, and Head of the United Nations Bureau at the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and as General Secretariat to the Presidency.

Ambassador de Rivero is a subject matter expert on climate change and a powerful advocate for countries to implement policies that provide food security, water governance, and renewable energies; thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as political and social unrest. He is the author of “New Economic Order and International Development Law” and “The Myth of Development: Non-Viable Economies and the Crisis of Civilization”; and has written several essays published by Le Monde Diplomatique.

De Rivero Barreto holds an International Relations degree from the Diplomatic Academy of Peru, is married to Vivian de Rivero, and has two daughters: Juliette and Katherine.
