Nazri is the 17th Ambassador of Malaysia to the United States of America. A seasoned politician, Nazri has held various Cabinet posts in his 28 years of politics, specializing in a wide range of issues particularly in governance, human rights and constitutional rights.

Nazri was born on May 15th 1954, in Ipoh of the northern state of Perak, Malaysia. He read law and was accepted as a Barrister- at-Law at the Lincoln’s Inn and started his own legal firm, Nazri Aziz & Wong. He then embarked on a long, illustrious and successful career in politics as Member of Parliament for Padang Rengas, from 1995 to 2022.

Nazri was fondly known as the de facto Law Minister of Malaysia when he was the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department from 2004 to 2013. He helmed legal-related and national security related departments including the Attorney General’s Chamber, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (formerly Anti-Corruption Agency), Prime Minister’s Department Legal Affairs Division, Parliamentary Affairs, Witness Protection Unit, Legal Aid Department, National Security Council, Public Service Department and 33 more portfolios. In his 10 years as Parliament Minister, he successfully tabled more than 100 law Bills to be passed into Acts.

Nazri is also known for his strong personality, principled character as the Parliament Deputy Whip – well respected by Members of Parliament across the bench. He helmed the Chair of Inter Parliament Union (Malaysian Chapter) for 16 years. He served in various Parliamentary Select Committees such as Human Rights and Constitutional Rights, and House Committees of International Relations, Migrant Workers and the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Anti Hopping Law. He was the Deputy Chair of Caucus Committee on Reformation and Governance headed then by the current Prime Minister.

Nazri had served under three Prime Ministers from 1995 until 2018, being one of the most senior ministers of 23 years, starting with his Senatorship in 1995 as Deputy Minister of Finance, and subsequently as Deputy in Prime Ministers Department. He became the Minister of Entrepreneur Development from 1999 to 2004. After his nine years of Legal portfolios, in 2013 he was tasked to promote Tourism and Culture; elevating Malaysia’s image to another notch of accolades and achievements.

Nazri entered politics in 1978, serving the United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) party, to date, for 45 years; travelled extensively as Youth EXCO of International Affairs Bureau and helmed the Deputy Chief of Youth Wing at National Level. He chaired National Youth Wing of the National Front (BN) Coalition from 1990-1994 and was appointed as UMNO Supreme Council Member until 2018. Currently, he is still the Division Head of UMNO Padang Rengas for 28 years.
